Long-billed and Short-billed Dowitchers can be very difficult to tell apart. Identification of juvenile-plumaged birds is fairly straightforward, but for other plumages it is sometimes tempting to throw a rock and listen to their distinctive vocalizations as they fly (please don’t do this!).

Join Jon Dunn as he discusses the ins and outs of Dowitcher identification, and which field marks can and cannot be relied on.

An useful article describing Dowitcher identification can be found here.
