We are excited to announce a new LAB pelagic trip! This is a 5-hour trip, giving us the opportunity to explore more areas and find more birds.
We depart in the early morning from King Harbor in Redondo Beach and we will return around noon.
We will explore the areas around Redondo Canyon, an underwater canyon that tends to have upwellings of food that attract birds. We will be on the lookout for shearwaters, alcids, terns, gulls, phalaropes, jaegers, and storm-petrels.
The trip will cost $100 per person, which includes a gratuity for the boat crew. Note that we will be on a 65-foot boat on the open ocean, and that there is a bit of a walk from the parking area to the boat. After making a reservation below, you will receive a confirmation and you will be emailed the meeting location.
Seasickness: While most people don’t get sick on the boat, seasickness can happen to anyone. If you must depart with your lunch, do so into the ocean at the back of the boat, and NOT in the restroom! Fortunately, there are steps that can be taken to prevent seasickness. First, there are effective seasickness-prevention medications (like Dramamine or Bonine [over the counter] or Scopalamine [prescription]). These should be taken well before you get on the boat, not when you are already sick. Seasickness is caused by conflict between the motion felt by your inner ear and the motion seen by your eyes. So it helps to stay outside in the breeze and look out at the horizon, rather than being in the cabin or (even worse) the restroom. Also, avoid spending too much time looking down at field guides, phones, or camera backs. The back/middle of the boat on the lower deck has less motion than other places on the boat, so you may feel better there. Also, many people find that it helps to have frequent small snacks (e.g. a bite of a cracker every few minutes) to keep your digestive system going forward and not in reverse. It also helps to get a good night’s sleep before the trip.
All individuals under the age of 18 participating in a LAB sponsored event must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or an adult designated as responsible for their well-being including their safety, behavior, and compliance with all applicable rules and regulations during the course of the event, program, activity, etc.
